EPCON Characterization Properties™ software application is currently available in the API Technical Data Book™, which also provides you with the latest updates and information regarding API Research, Standards, and Methods.
Characterization of petroleum fractions is vital to the petroleum refining industry for the accurate design and operation of process systems. For example, determination of pour point, which is the lowest temperature, expressed as a multiple of 5ºF, at which the liquid is observed to flow when cooled under prescribed conditions, gives an indication of the minimum temperature above which the oil can be transported. Similarly, the acentric factor of a petroleum fraction is useful for correlating physical and thermodynamic properties of the fraction in the design of columns, exchangers, etc.
The EPCON Equation Compiler™ interface and computation engine is used for the Characterization Properties and the majority of other software programs in the API Technical Data Book except for the THERMA Flash, Distillation Interconversions, Conversion Calculator, and Data Book Explorer programs, All Equation Compiler programs are based on the same EPCON proprietary technology to provide the user many features and consistency across all of these programs. This completely redeveloped program is designed to provide all available characterization properties by entering inputs only once.
Most of the characterization properties that require Mean Average Boiling Point and Specific/API gravity as inputs are listed under the D86, D2887 & TBP tabs in the tree-view. The characterization properties that require inputs not common to most of the other characterization properties are separated and are listed under the ‘Other Characterization Properties’ in the tree-view or Options menu.
Intercorrelations between Smoke Point to Aniline Point and Cloud Point to Pour Point are listed under ‘Intercorrelations’. Viscosity to Specific/API Gravity is listed under ‘Other Correlation’. The Petro Fraction Properties interface works exactly like the Characterization Properties window but provides more physical properties directly related to equipment design such as density, viscosity, heat capacity, thermal conductivity, etc.
