Introduction

Either the pressure drop, the sizing coefficient, or the flow rate may be determined. The user may evaluate the effects of low versus high recovery valves, determine valve size to meet a given process demand, or analyze the effects of using an existing valve in a different system. Based on the Instrument Society of America Standard Flow Equations for Sizing Control Valves, this program provide a quick and accurate way to evaluate your control valve needs.

To provide uniformity in the control valve industry, manufacturers have established valve-sizing coefficients for their control valves. These coefficients describe the pressure drop characteristics of the control valve. This permits an accurate valve specification in order to better meet a given process requirement, and provides a basis for the comparison of the valves made by different manufacturers.

This window displays the input values in the white background boxes and the calculation results in the grey background boxes. Six drop-down menus are provided on this screen. Enter the known values in the units indicated, and physical properties can be determined in the Process Innovator™ interface under the Physical Properties pane. The control valve sizing coefficients are determined by the choices of valve size, type, and style from these drop down menus, respectively. The valve coefficients are representative values published by ISA that closely match most valve manufacturers. Alternatively, the sizing coefficients can be obtained from the manufacturer for a given valve opening and manually entered. Click the Calculate button to determine the results, which are displayed in grey background boxes below the inputs.

The first icon clears the screen to run another calculation. The next icons are for opening and saving calculations. The Change Units icon converts between English and Metric units. The last icon allow for exporting the inputs and outputs to Excel and for printing out the results.

This drop down menu is used to select either liquid or gas phase and either volumetric or mass flow.

The Valve Size menu allows the user to select a valve orifice size from a list of standard valve sizes. This selection automatically decides the valve coefficient based on the selection of the Valve Type and Valve Style menus from an available library of valve coefficients for common valves. The valve coefficient Cv and other related sizing factors are entered into the appropriate data input field when any of these three menus are selected. The user may also manually enter the valve coefficient and other related sizing factor values to those provided by the valve manufacturer. This allows for quick and easy evaluation of different valve types for an application. These menus are not available for relief valve sizing.
