Crude oils can contain thousands of different chemical compounds, and trying to classify a crude oil into individual pure components for the purpose of determining phase splits and properties is not practical. Hence, crude oils are separated into petroleum fractions according to the range of boiling points of the compounds included in each petroleum fraction. Distillation of these petroleum fractions is done to define the volatility characteristics of each fraction - referred to as pseudo components. This provides a practical approach to classify the petroleum fractions and to determine their properties. Different distillation methods are utilized for different types of petroleum fractions. Heavy fractions are usually distilled at sub-atmospheric pressures, while lighter fractions are usually distilled at atmospheric pressures. Several different types of distillation methods are also utilized, as well. Interconversion of distillation temperatures thus becomes important for correlating properties of petroleum fractions. The Distillation Interconversions screen allows users to convert from one type of distillation for which petroleum fraction data is available, to another type. Correlations were developed using data for hydrocarbon stocks and fractions, which included many components which exhibited smooth distillation curves. The correlations do not apply to mixtures of a few compounds with widely different boiling points. Up to nine temperatures can be converted at one time.
