Introduction

The methods used are based on the Fluid Meters report published by ASME. These methods calculate the discharge coefficient accurately without the need to search through tables to determine it. The program can solve for pressure drop, orifice diameter, or flow rate and supports all the three popular types of orifice taps (flange, radius, and vena contracta). In addition, it calculates the gas expansion coefficient for gas systems.

Differential pressure flow meters are used to create restrictions in pipelines that enable flow measurement. Pressure drop across an orifice plate, venturi tube, or flow nozzle can then be measured to accurately determine the flow rate in the pipeline. New developments in flow technology have led to more efficient flow measuring devices based on the pressure drop, however, orifice plates, venturi tubes, and flow nozzles are still commonly used due to their simplicity, reliability, and relative low cost of installation and maintenance.

First select the units of measure by clicking on the Change Units icon in the toolbar. Next, enter the Data Input fields with the white background color including physical properties and two of the 3 possible Unknown Variables. All data input should correspond to the process operating conditions - physical properties should be entered for the operating temperature and pressure. Alternatively, determine the physical properties in the Fluid Properties window that is accessible from the Process Innovator prior to opening the Flowmeter Sizing window. The physical property values will then be automatically transferred to the flowmeter input screen.

The results of the analysis will be displayed when the Calculate button is clicked. The Export icon in the toolbar will export the results to Excel for documentation purposes and for printing of the results. Data can be saved or opened by clicking on these icons in the toolbar.

This toolbar allows the user to start a new analysis, open or save calculations, print the results, change units and export results to Excel for documentation and printing purposes. The Change Units switches the units used in the program from English to Metric and vice-versa. For converting units of measure to these standard set of units, use the Conversion Calculator accessed from the Process Innovator interface.

Phase and Flow Type

Pipe Size and Pipe Type

The Size menu provides a choice of standard pipe diameters to the user. Alternatively, enter the pipe diameter directly in the input field if the required size is not found in the menu. While the Size menu is used to specify the pipe diameter, the Type menu is used to specify the pipe wall thickness to determine the inside pipe diameter


Tap Type

Choose the type of orifice taps that are to be used, from this menu (Flange, Radius, or Vena Contracta). This menu is enabled for use with orifices only.


Gas Cp/Cv Ratio

This menu is used to choose the gas specific heat ratio. Some of the common gases that have these particular specific heat ratios are listed in the menu.
