EPCON Pipe Sizing Software™ application, Powered by Process Innovator™, determines the flow rate, pressure drop, or diameter (single line mode) for single phase flows in individual pipes based on the Darcy and Moody formulas.
Two of the three possible unknown values of Flowrate, Pipe Internal Diameter, and Friction Loss must be known. The unknown value can be chosen from the Unknown Variable menu. First specify whether the fluid is a liquid or a gas in the Phase and Flow Type menu. All the input fields for flowrate, internal diameter (if pressure drop is the unknown), length, elevation change, inlet pressure, density and viscosity must be entered with relevant data. The pipe internal diameter will be automatically entered after making selections in the Pipe Type and Pipe Size drop down menus. The elevation difference between the inlet and outlet of the pipe segment being analyzed is entered for the elevation change. This value is positive when the pipe outlet is at a higher elevation than the pipe inlet and negative when the opposite is true.
The gas volumetric flowrate needs to be specified in “standard” units. The units of measure may be toggled between English and Metric by clicking on the Change Units icon. The density and viscosity will be automatically populated from the physical property window of the Process Innovator.
The program displays the output values in the grey background boxes. The output includes the selected unknown (pressure drop in this example) and other calculated variables used to arrive at the result such as Reynolds number, friction factor and the velocity.
